There are a few normal noises associated with the operation of your furnace and some noises that should not be ignored!
A) Banging noise
If the furnace is making a loud banging noise when it turns on, this could be caused by dirty burners which cause a delayed ignition. As a result, the gas builds up inside the furnace and a mini explosion occurs when it ignites, causing a loud bang! This explosion, if happening often, can be detrimental to the components, especially to the heat exchanger which can crack. This would be an expensive repair or possible replacement of your furnace.
Annual preventative maintenance service where burners are checked and cleaned is therefore essential!
B) Noise comes from outside the furnace
If the noise is heard several feet away from the furnace, it could be coming from the expansion of your air ducts. To remedy this, open more vents and check that your air filter is not clogged with dust and debris, thus helping ensure that the air is flowing freely around your home.
C) I hear a whining, grinding noise
Either of these noises could indicate that there is a loose or faulty fan, belt or blower motor. As these parts are integral to the operation of your furnace, they should be repaired as soon as possible to prolong the life of your furnace and prevent more costly repairs or replacement.
