AC Repair in Vancouver
When a heat dome settles over the Lower Mainland and your air conditioner quits, a fast, correct repair matters. BC Wide Heating & Air Conditioning has serviced cooling systems across Vancouver since 1999, from West End condo towers to character homes on the East Side. We diagnose the real cause of a breakdown rather than guessing at parts, and we back our work as a TSBC-licensed contractor (LGA0090068). This guide explains what tends to fail on Vancouver air conditioners, how repairs are approached, and when it makes sense to call a technician.
Common AC Problems in Vancouver Homes
Vancouver’s housing mix shapes the cooling issues we see. The city runs from dense downtown high-rises and Yaletown lofts to ground-oriented homes in Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Kerrisdale and Renfrew-Collingwood. Each comes with its own quirks.
- Condos and apartments: Many rely on ductless mini-splits or packaged terminal units. Blocked condensate drains, frozen coils and failed start capacitors are frequent in these compact systems.
- Older detached homes: Houses retrofitted with central air often have undersized or leaky ductwork in unfinished basements and attics, which strains the equipment on hot days.
- Heat pumps: A growing share of Vancouver homes use heat pumps for both heating and cooling. Reversing-valve faults and refrigerant charge issues show up here.
- Salt-air and coastal moisture: Homes near English Bay, Jericho and the Fraser see faster corrosion on outdoor condenser fins and electrical contacts.
Signs Your AC Needs Repair
Catching a fault early usually means a smaller, cheaper fix. Watch for these symptoms:
- Warm or weak airflow from the vents even when the system runs
- The unit short-cycles, turning on and off every few minutes
- Ice forming on the indoor coil or the refrigerant line
- Grinding, buzzing or rattling from the outdoor condenser
- Water pooling near the indoor unit or a tripped condensate float switch
- A breaker that trips whenever the AC starts
- Rising hydro bills with no change in how you use the system
Several of these point to electrical or refrigerant faults that are not safe to handle yourself. Refrigerant in particular is regulated and must be handled by a certified technician. If you notice any of the above, switch the system off and call BC Wide.
How We Diagnose and Repair
A proper repair starts with a methodical diagnosis. Our technicians check airflow, electrical components, the thermostat, refrigerant pressures and the condensate path before recommending a fix. Common repairs include replacing run and start capacitors, contactors, condenser fan motors and blower motors; clearing or re-piping condensate drains; locating and sealing refrigerant leaks and recharging to spec; and correcting thermostat or control-board faults. We explain what we found, give you the cost up front, and only proceed once you approve.
Typical AC Repair Cost Ranges in Vancouver
Prices vary with the part, the system type and access. The ranges below are general guidance for the Lower Mainland, not a quote.
| Repair | Typical range (CAD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic / service call | $90 – $180 | Often credited toward the repair |
| Capacitor replacement | $150 – $400 | One of the most common failures |
| Contactor replacement | $180 – $450 | Switches power to the compressor |
| Condenser fan motor | $400 – $900 | Varies by motor type |
| Refrigerant leak repair + recharge | $450 – $1,500+ | Depends on leak location |
| Blower motor | $500 – $1,200 | Indoor air handler |
If a compressor has failed on an older unit, we will give you an honest comparison between repairing and replacing so you are not pouring money into equipment near the end of its life.

Repair or Replace? Making the Call
Not every breakdown justifies a repair. As a rough rule, if your air conditioner is more than 12 to 15 years old, uses the older R-22 refrigerant, and faces a repair costing more than a third of a new system, replacement usually wins. R-22 has been phased out and is now expensive and hard to source, which makes leak repairs on those units a poor investment. Newer systems, by contrast, are almost always worth fixing. When we attend a call, we tell you plainly which side of that line your unit falls on, and if replacement makes more sense we explain the heat-pump rebates that can soften the cost.
Preventing the Next Breakdown
Many of the failures we see in Vancouver are avoidable with simple upkeep. A little attention each season keeps your system reliable through the hottest stretch:
- Replace or clean the furnace or air-handler filter every one to three months during cooling season
- Keep the outdoor condenser clear of leaves, cottonwood fluff and shrubbery, leaving at least 60 cm of clearance
- Gently rinse the outdoor coil with a hose to remove dust and pollen, especially near busy roads
- Pour a cup of water through the condensate drain at the start of the season to confirm it flows freely
- Book a professional tune-up each spring so small issues are caught before a heat wave
A spring maintenance visit also lets us check refrigerant charge, electrical connections and capacitor health, the very components most likely to fail under summer load. It is the cheapest insurance against a mid-July breakdown.
